The following are stock tips to select the best markets, right sectors and industry groups, while investing in stocks. So you can familiarize yourself with some key concepts and be better informed before investing.

Choosing a sector

So what is a sector? A sector is a wide group of industries in an economy. Let's say for example, Finance is a sector of the economy that could include Banks, Investment Banks, and Mutual Funds and so on. Health may be another sector of the economy may include hospitals and medical services. Transportation may be another sector of the economy and may include Airlines, Railways, and Trucking services and so on. Power may be another sector of the economy and may include Power Generation and Power distribution. Consumer goods and services, Telecom may be other sectors of the economy.

What is an industry group?

An industry group is a smaller group and specific companies within a sector. A sub-group will still be a sub-category more specific companies in a group of industries. For an example, Viacom is a name well known brand name. Viacom is the television, and Radio Company. So sector of Viacom is an entertainment and leisure industry. Within this group is part of the media and within this group, the subgroup is TV / Radio.

The majority of the top performing stocks are usually from the leading sectors. As per the research and analysis, it has revealed that 37% of stock price movement is tied to the performance of the industry group the stock is in. Another 12% is due to strength across the sector. So you can see almost half the price movement is tied to the performance of the industry group. This helps you to choose the industry before you purchase the stock.

The three main stock indexes in the US are the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the NASDAQ, and the S&P 500. The indexes will not give you the information about the sector and the industry in the market. It only shows the combined performance of the stocks in that group.
